I’ve been asked by one of my customers how to upload and link to a PDF file in their WordPress blog so I’d thought I’d share that with everyone as it may be a common problem.

1. Firstly you need to make sure that that PDF file you want to upload is less than 8 megabytes as this is a limited imposed by WordPress on Media uploads.

2. Then in your WordPress dashboard you need to go to Media and choose the option to “Add New” media. See below.

Wordpress dashboard - Add new media screen

Click on the “Select Files” button and find your file that you want to upload or alternatively drag your PDF file into the dotted box.

Make sure that the “All files” option is selected when looking for your PDF file otherwise you won’t be able to see it in your directory.

Navigate through your directories to locate the file to be uploaded

3. Select your particular file and then the “Open” button to upload it into the WordPress Media Gallery .

 4. This uploads the files into the gallery and once the upload is complete you will see that you can edit the media details. Edit Media File Details

You can now update the title of the file and see where the file is saved.

If you want to send visitors to a post where they can access and download the PDF then give them the web address you can see listed as “Permalink:” that is just under the title.

In the next post I shall show you how to link to the PDF and add it into a post or a page.
