Super Affiliate – Mark Ling
Now within affiliate marketing just like in other aspects of life there are superstars – these people are known as super affiliates and Mark Ling is one of them. Now was wasn’t always a super affiliate – he’s has to work at it to get to that point but his drive and creative methods have kept him going since he first started looking for ways to make money online back in 1999.
The Early Days
Mark Ling became an affiliate marketer accidently in 1999 when his friend Charlie introduced him to selling posters at a squash tournament. Back then Internet marketing was fairly simple and not many people were making the millions you hear about today. However there was still money to be made. They started with a basic Geocities website from where they sent people onto the site that sold the posters. Mark’s friend Charlie was making about $50 a week by having a banner linking to a poster selling site. Mark Ling decided to get in on the act and focused on selling posters of celebrities while Charlie concentrated on the sports posters. He started with a handful of simple sites and started making a modest profit from them. He quickly learned how to build his sites faster and learned how to target a larger market. So soon that $50 per week was doubled and then tripled, etc.
With that he was able to quit the pizza delivery job he had and actually hired a few friends to build a business that he’d never have guessed could grow so quickly. They rented a house and set up a host of computers on which they all started making websites. They basically were taking classes in how to do well in search engine listings and in between those classes built these simple sites to drive more traffic to the poster sites. They continuously repeated the success formula and Mark Ling was soon at the top of a growing online industry.
Utilising the skills he learned in those early days selling posters Mark has since expanded into many other affiliate markets such as dog training, language learning, marriage saving, and video games. Mark was smart enough to embrace certain aspects of affiliate marketing as they developed – including the use of AdWords in 2003 when it was introduced and the use of Social Media and YouTube in 2005 as effective marketing tools.
Whereas many successful Internet marketing experts will turn the majority of their focus onto the Internet Marketing (IM) niche, Mark still focuses his efforts heavily into affiliate marketing niches with only a small part of his business devoted to IM s0 he continues to develop affiliate marketing websites through his company. However he has also turned toward sharing his secrets of success with aspiring affiliate marketers.
He launched his AffiloBlueprint membership product in 2008, made up of 12 distinct weekly guides to help marketers develop a long term marketing strategy. Shortly after, he launched Affilorama, his blog and repository for teleseminars, webinars, and presentations alongside blog posts and free tools he has developed to help marketers with certain tactics. One such free tool is Traffic Travis – which is an SEO and PPC research tool available as a free download (as well as a premium tool for power users).
Of course with success came requests for speaking engagements and so Mark started giving seminars and presentations across the globe, including Las Vegas – presenting his unique combined knowledge that he has gathered in the affiliate marketing arena.
So while Mark has indeed developed a repertoire that includes affiliate training, product creation and consultation, the core of his business still actually remains his affiliate marketing websites and marketing lists.
And indeed the latest thing that Mark has started to look at is selling ebooks on Amazon Kindle. While this is not yet making him the same amount of money as his affiliate marketing business it is an expanding area.
Mark currently lives in Christchurch, New Zealand with his wife and son.
